Lars Halin
Lars Erick Halin was the son of Erick Halin and Marina Olsen.1 Lars Erick Halin was born on 12 February 1856 at Ekra, Lima, Kopparberg, Sweden.2 He married Julia Guro Ellefson, daughter of Ellef Olason and Mette Nilsdatter, on 2 June 1898 at Forman, Sargent Co, North Dakota.3 Lars Erick Halin died on 24 June 1921 at Bowen Twp, Sargent Co, North Dakota, at age 65.4 His obituary read as follows: From The Prairie Press

A pall of gloom was cast over the entire community last Friday when it became known that L. E. Halin, prominent farmer residing southwest of Gwinner, had been called to the Great Beyond on that morning at 8:35
0'clock.

He had been ill but a few days suffering with an attack of heart failure, but it was not thought that the end was so near and his sudden departure was a severer shock to his family.

L. E. Halin was born in Sweden 65 years ago and came to this country in 1879 at the age of 23 years arriving at Brainard, Minn. He was an expert cabinet maker and was employed in the R. R. shops at Brainard finishing passenger coaches at which place he remained several years. He had taken the homestead south from here in the meantime and built a shack to which he made the necessary visits prescribed for homesteaders and often experienced difficulties. He would have to walk about 60 miles when he came to stay on his claim, the nearest station being Buffalo, N. D., and on two occasions when he arrived his shanty had been stolen thus necessitating the erection of another each time, but he stayed by his land and in 1886 he moved on the claim and commenced the improvement which had developed his farm into one of the beauty spots of Sargent county. On June 2 1898, at Forman Mr. Halin was united in marriage to Mrs. Julia Vie and this happy union was blessed with two boys, Edwin and Lorix, and a daughter, Mabel, who together with a stepdaughter, Mrs. Leo Noyes of Cogswell, and two brothers, John and O. E. Halin and three sisters, Hanna Halin and Mrs Mary Erickson, Sweden and Mrs. R. P. Johnson, Gwinner, survive to mourn his demise.

He was a true friend, a helpful and pleasant neighbor, a loving husband and a good christian[sic] man. He had always taken an active part in affairs that aimed to promote the community's welfare and was esteemed by all who knew him. He served as county commissioner from his district and was urged several times to run for a legislative office declining each time. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Cogswell who had charge of the funeral, the Milnor and Forman Lodges attending.

The funeral was held monday Rev. L. A. Dodge of Cogswell officiating, and the interment made in the Lutheran cemetery south of Gwinner. He was buried on 27 June 1921 at Gwinner, Sargent Co, North Dakota.4
He was a farmer and a wood carver. He emigrated circa 30 April 1879 from Ekra, Lima, Kopparberg, Sweden.2 He immigrated in June 1879 to New York City, New York.5 He was employed between 30 July 1879 and 1886 at Northern Pacific Railway, Brainerd, Crowwing Co, North Dakota, as a wood carver working on many of the intricate designs in the passenger and dinning cars. He resided in 1886 at Sargent Co, North Dakota. He was elected as County Commissioner for the Third District on 3 November 1896 at Sargent Co, North Dakota.6 He and Julia Guro Ellefson appeared on the census of 3 May 1910 at Bowen Twp, Sargent Co, North Dakota.7
