Daniel E. Thornburg1,2,3,4 (M)
b. c 1824, d. 10 Jun 1911
Pop-up Pedigree

Daniel E. Thornburg was the son of Leonard Thornburg and Dorothy (?).5 Daniel E. Thornburg was born circa 1824 at Lincoln Co, North Carolina.6 He was born in May 1824 at South Carolina.7 He was born circa 1826 at South Carolina.8 He was born circa 1830 at North Carolina.9,10 He was born on 1 May 1830.11 He was born circa 1832 at North Carolina.5 He married Saraphina Shipley, daughter of Asa Shipley and Roseanna Bean, on 30 March 1851 at Washington Co, Tennessee,, ceremony performed by John V. Hoss, Justice of the Peace.1,12,13 Daniel E. Thornburg married Elizabeth Sell on 16 August 1866, ceremony performed by George E. Brown, Minister.1,2,14,10 Daniel E. Thornburg died on 10 June 1911.11 He was buried after 10 June 1911 at Boone's Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Johnson City, Washington Co, Tennessee.15
He was also known as Ales Thornburg.9 He was also known as Elias Thornburg.5 He was also known as D. P. Thornburg.16 The parentage of Daniel is circumstantial. On his pension application for benefits relating to his service in the Civil War he states that he was born in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He also states that he had lived in Tennessee for fifty nine years which would place his moving there around 1847. In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census he is listed as Ales Thornburg. In looking at the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Washington County Tennessee there is a Leonard Thornburg who has a son named Elias. The family of Leonard are all born in North Carolina. In looking at the census records for Lincoln County, North Carolina in 1830 there is a Leonard THRONBURG of the right age listed with family members who are also of the right age to be those included in the 1850 census listing. So it is very probable that the father and mother of Daniel are the Leonard and Dorothy listed in Washington County, Tennessee in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census.17 He was a laborer on 25 September 1850 at 4th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.5 He was a hired by the year laborer on 3 July 1860 at Knob Creek District, Jonesboro, Washington Co, Tennessee.9 He and Saraphina Shipley appeared on the census of 3 July 1860 at Knob Creek District, Jonesboro, Washington Co, Tennessee.9 Daniel E. Thornburg performed military service on 1 December 1862 at Tennessee, with Company G, 29th Infantry Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers, CSA; Col. Horace Rice, Capt. T. E. Reeves ; 1st Lieutenant John K. Shipley. Company G consolidated with Company H under Capt. J. K. Shipley. Daniel served with this unit until April of 1865 when the company, along with him, surrendered under General J. E. Johnston near Greensboro, North Carolina, immediately after the surrender of General Lee in Virginia. He was paroled 1 May 1865 at Greensboro. During his time in the CSA he was never reported absent without leave. In 1906 he began the process of applying for a soldiers pension citing an inflammation of the bladder as a war wound which he contacted while on duty. He was treated at the hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee during the war for this condition.6 He was a farmer on 4 July 1870 at Jonesboro Post Office, 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.10 He and Elizabeth Sell appeared on the census of 4 July 1870 at Jonesboro Post Office, 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.10 Daniel E. Thornburg was a farmer on 10 June 1880 at 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.18 He and Elizabeth Sell appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 at 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.18 Daniel E. Thornburg was a farmer on 4 June 1900 at 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.7 He and Elizabeth Sell appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 at 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.7 Daniel E. Thornburg was a Farmer on 15 April 1910 at 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.19 He and Elizabeth Sell appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at 11th Civil District, Washington Co, Tennessee.19
