Crossing Lists

Lists of my crosses with links to descriptions and parentage diagrams.

Strategy #1 - Improve Frontenac - Frontenac is the best vine in my vineyard. Starting from riparia doesn't make sense to me. Frontenac is my new 'riparia'. It does have some of the 'bad' things from riparia. It has all the 'good' things that riparia has plus some of the 'good' things that vinifera donated. It is a good parent. It's offspring do not have the high acid, even if crossed to itself. I am throwing any pollen that I can get at it, vinifera and hybrid.

Strategy #2 - Look for a reasonable northern seedless table grape. Prairie Star is a terrible grape mostly because it takes so long to establish itself. But...It was bred as a table grape not wine. It grows a bit like vinifera. It is very cold-hardy. I am throwing table grape pollen at it to see what happens.

Strategy #3 - I am calling these analog crosses. Other Breeders have had some noteworthy successes but they had different goals and they were short some of the information that we have now. I want to improve on them. An example - Elmer Swenson bred Edelweiss by crossing MN 78 x Ontario. MN 78 is a good parent & heterogeneous for color but not really very cold-hardy. Elmer used it a lot. Frontenac is also a good parent & heterogeneous for color but very cold-hardy. Frontenac is also a better wine grape than MN 78. I am crossing Frontenac x Ontario to see if I can get something like Edelweiss but hardier and better suited for my area.

Strategy #4 - Stray from the previous three strategies
